Tchiloli: The tragedy of the Marquis of Mantua

In the XVI century, the traveling comedians that visited the island of São Tomé, brought with them parts of the Cycle of Charles the Great. One fragment of this cycle became an integrated part of Santomean culture and gave origin to the 'tchiloli' or 'the tragedy of the Marquis of Mantua'.

The story begins:
The tragedy tells about the dramatic judgment of Dom Carloto, the emperor Charles the Great's only son, accused of having murdered his best friend, Prince Valdevino.

The two friends, Dom Carloto and Prince Valdevino (the nephew of the Marquis of Mantua) are going hunting. As the forest is getting denser, Dom Carloto suggests that they leave the horses behind with the page and continue by foot. Prince Valdevino, seeing no harm in this, accepts, and the two of them continue penetrating into the dark forest…

We shall be witnesses to the beautiful synthesis of European and African culture, as the performance has incorporated several typical elements from Santomean culture, namely the traditional dances.
